A BASELINE
In my county, there are numerous underground streams quietly flowing beneath the surface. These hidden waterways wind their way through the woods or meander around nearby homes, remaining dry for the majority of the year until they come to life during our brief California winters. I often find myself pondering these streams, particularly admiring the homes that feature small bridges for driveways, essential only during those few months when the streams swell. There's a fascinating allure to the necessity of something that's only vital for a fraction of time, yet during that crucial period, it becomes indispensable.
As a psychoanalyst, I draw inspiration from the concept of underground streams. Psychoanalysis shares a similar intrigue. It revolves around exploring the unseen and the yet to emerge. Psychoanalysts are constantly contemplating how we can coax these hidden treasures into the light of consciousness, even if only temporarily, to help integrate their insights. The unconscious mind mirrors an underground stream, constantly flowing and exerting its influence, even when it's not readily apparent to the naked eye. This perpetual flow of energy, or material as we call it in psychoanalysis, may not always be visible, but it profoundly shapes our thoughts and behaviors. I wonder about the similarities between the psychoanalytic unconscious and what we see as clairvoyants when reading the energy of another person. Is the unconscious also energy someone is handling and instead of words, clairvoyants bring it to light through pictures?
Perhaps everything is everything.
It's conceivable that everything is interconnected. That energy, whether internal or external, follows a similar stream like pattern. Our bodies harbor an energetic current akin to an underground stream, albeit one that operates both as a foundational baseline and creates changes immediately. This awareness of our energetic baseline informs my work with clients and is a result of my own exploration and study of energy practices. Engaging in daily energy movement practices yields effects akin to taking a daily vitamin supplement. Both practices require minimal effort yet yield immediate and long-term benefits. Much like how a vitamin supplement bolsters our immune system long term and may prevent us from getting a cold in the moment, energetic practices contribute to our overall well-being, operating quietly in the background like an underground stream, steadily fostering improvements. And also providing us with immediate insights and opportunities.
Running energy daily establishes a subtle yet profound baseline, influencing both our physical and mental states. It fosters clarity and equanimity, both in the moment and over time, resembling a short-term and long-term investment simultaneously. As we persist in these practices, we integrate this sense of balance and calm at a deeper level, gradually transforming our responses to life's challenges. And of course greatly influencing our creative process. It's a testament to the power of consistency and the cumulative effect of small, daily actions.

SOLAR TRANSIT
5-21-24
Gate 20
Gate of Now
On May 21, the sun gracefully traverses Gate 20, known as the Gate ofNow. During this celestial transit, you're invited to embark on a deeply introspective voyage of self-discovery. Gate 20 offers a profound opportunity to delve into your inner realm, particularly focusing on how you practice patience and learn to trust in the right timing of things.
Gate 20 tasks you with the opportunity to learn to be patient. To be present and observe, and to wait and trust in the right timing of things. Patience is a large part of Human Design and working on the trust necessary to allow ourselves to not push or force and wait, even on things that set our soul on fire. This waiting allows others to be invested in the momentum and energy of what we desire. And this creates alignment. This waiting may sound easier said than done. And, yes, it is hard! But Human Design offers so much guidance along the way as to where to focus our energy while we are waiting.
The essence of Gate 20 lies in the power of presence and the authenticity of truth-speaking in the present moment. It embraces the understanding that all essential knowledge resides in the now, and it places unwavering trust in the revelation of the highest potential through trust in the right timing of things. .
This transit may manifest as a tendency to make choices dictated by the mind and logic rather than tapping into inner wisdom, coupled with a challenge to remain still and fully present in the current moment. This energy may succumb to external pressures, leading to the dispensing of unsolicited or inaccurate advice or speaking too soon.
Here are some journaling prompts to deepen your understanding and engagement with this transit:
1. Reflect on a recent moment when you felt the pull to rush or force a creative project. What emotions or thoughts arose during this experience? How might embracing patience have influenced the outcome differently?
2. Consider a creative endeavor that has been brewing within you. How can you cultivate trust in the timing of its manifestation? Explore ways to surrender to the flow of Divine Timing and allow the project to unfold organically.
3. Take a moment to connect with the energy of the present moment. What sensations do you notice in your body? How can you channel this present-moment awareness into your creative process, allowing it to guide your actions and decisions?
4. Think about a situation where you offered advice or input without fully tuning into your inner wisdom. What were the repercussions of this action? How can you cultivate a deeper sense of stillness and presence to ensure that your guidance comes from an authentic place?
Gate 20 allows us to embrace patience and trust. This celestial event prompts introspection into our ability to be present and authentic in the moment. While challenging, Gate 20 teaches us that essential wisdom resides in being present in the now. Yet, encouraging against making decisions driven solely by logic or succumbing to external pressures. By cultivating patience and inner wisdom, we create alignment to experience our highest potential.

Q: Why don't you offer packages?
I’ve been asked this question a handful of times and was asked again recently, so I thought it was time to provide a mindful answer. First, I’ll share that consultants, mentors and coaches have autonomy to work in the way that helps them provide the highest level of service. When I was in training as a psychotherapist, I had a colleague in my cohort who was also an ER psychiatric nurse. She had been trained very differently than the psychoanalytic training we were both currently receiving. In more traditional psychoanalysis, the analyst presents a blank slate. They do not take notes during sessions and sometimes do not even face the patient. While we were working on a college campus at the time and sitting across from our patients face to face, we were discouraged from taking notes. In the psychoanalytic realm this is seen as a no-no. There are numerous and well thought out reasons as to why, but I will not illuminate them right here, right now. My colleague arrived to group consultation with our supervisor one afternoon with a clipboard full of notes from a session with the patient they were presenting. My supervisor inquired as to whether they were taking notes in session. When my colleague said yes, they were asked to share why. My colleague explained that taking notes, whether considered to be within the methodology of psychoanalysis or not, enabled them to be a better clinician. And that was the end of that. The exchange always stuck with me and I often share this example with Mentorship clients to emphasize that we all have permission to use the tools that enable us to provide the highest level of service, no matter what the stuffy psychoanalytic scholars say. Wink, wink.
While I no longer practice as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, there are certain procedures I continue to find ethical and adhere to in my Mentorship work. First,I do not share identifiable testimonials - I strongly believe that it is not my job to share who I am working with. If a client wants to discuss our work together they are free to do so but I do not advertise who my clients are. My testimonials remain anonymous.
Second, I work best with a strong degree of relational trust. And that goes both ways. Just as I would never have tied a psychotherapy patient to a certain number of sessions I do not ask my Mentorship clients to sign a contract for a package. Insights and getting unstuck takes the time it takes. If it only takes 2 sessions then it only takes 2 sessions. If it takes 2 years then it takes two years. Often clients work with me one way for several months or even a year and then our work shifts. Shifts are good. Changes are good. We want change. Mentorship should evolve. If I am doing my job then my clients will change. The degree of our work will deepen, shift, and sometimes end. No scenario is ever a waste of my time. Whatever time I spend with clients, whether short or long I trust the impact of our work together. I present each prospective client with recommendations for how to best start given their concerns, but working together in Mentorship is an ongoing conversation and transformation not a predetermined set of circumstances.
Again, I want to stress that however a consultant, coach, meteor supervisor, etc. chooses to work they have permission to work in the way that allows them to offer the highest level of service. Allowing clients to take the time they need is how I work best.
