A LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
A Light in the Attic
Shel Silverstein
There’s a light on in the attic.
Though the house is dark and shuttered.
I can see a flickerin’ flutter,
And I know what it’s about.
There’s a light on in the attic.
I can see it from the outside,
And I know you’re on the inside…lookin’ out.
After working with creatives for nearly 3 decades in one capacity or another, I can say with certainty that it is seldom I have encountered a creative person who is not frustrated by the innate limitations of the human body. The human body is amazing. To the point of which with all the scientific understanding of how the body does what it does to sustain us, it is still pretty magical. The idea of a cell is profound. And we are made of roughly 30 trillion of them and about 330 billion of them are replaced every single day. That’s a lot to wrap your head around.
And yet.
Many of us at one point or another in our lives, by choice or through trauma, make very clear separations from our body. We move to the attic to occupy our mind and logic and shutter up the rest. Often we feel betrayed by our bodies, frustrated at their slower and mechanical nature. We turn off the lights.
Creating the connection back to the body is one of the foundations of Human Design, energy work, and manifestation (yes, that too) as being guided by the wisdom of our bodies is really important for our energy, and as such our creativity. But recreating this connection can be thorny.
As creatives, the spirit of us, the being part moves really, really fast. From the attic (our minds) we can create quickly, destroy quickly and move in non-linear and free flowing ways. We can cultivate genius with dexterity, innovation and ingenuity. The speed, the delight, the limitlessness, it all seems to come from the attic. So many of us choose to live from there.
The body is slow in comparison and moves in a very mechanical and comparatively sluggish and basic way. There are processes that take the time they take. Muscle memory that takes time to build, skills, dexterity. The body takes time to catch up to the spirit of us. It can seem like by the time we pick up a pencil, paintbrush, tools, or sit at our desk, we are trying to get our body to catch up to what our mind has already created. Compared to the speed and agility of our spirit, the body seems, well, a bit outdated.
And then there’s the conditioning that is placed upon the body. What a body should look like, what it should be able to do. What a strong body should be. What a weak body is. What a female body should look like. A male body should look like. That there should be a gendered ideal of a body at all. We are inundated with so much messaging about the body, a body, that it is common for us to become buried in it. Only allowing the attic of ourselves to shine a light outward above the bullshit.
Here's the thing though. We need a body. Duh. But seriously. I’m talking to all those fellow attic dwellers out there. Without a body, there is no communication of your creativity. The body is the vessel that our spirit, our being, inhabits on this earth. The body makes the communication of our creativity possible. Without a body our creativity cannot be communicated and shared. We are given this incredible chance to come into a body, as awkward and weird as it may seem, to be able to communicate our gifts. The spirit can write a song, but only the body can make it real right here right now. Only a body can communicate that song, share that song. The impact of what we create arrives because we have a body to create it from.
So, it’s best to be in it. In a body. In your body.
And yet.
This is not a simple act.
But the benefits are profound. Being fully in the body opens up our energy, making the system whole. Creating a powerful connection between the spirit of us and how that energy and creativity is expressed. If your creativity is off the chart just living from the attic, imagine what you can do inhabiting your entire system. Let the light shine from throughout. It’s profound.
Making this shift takes time. As the body takes time. The spirit of you moves so much faster and this difference in speed is where frustration lies. But it is also where next level growth and possibility lives. Being in the body is essential to cultivating your creativity.
So how do you get into the body and learn to shine a light from the entire vessel and not just the attic?
Practice. Ritualistic practice. Every single day. I like to use meditation to enter back into the body and then grounding and energy work to create a strong being and body connection. It is the integration of the two where we become the most powerful, profound and sovereign in our creative process. As part of mentorship we work on this connection as part of cultivating your creative genius.
I’m working on the beginning stage of a subscription/membership that will allow access to the series of meditation and teachings I use in mentorship for everyone. Stay tuned. If you are interested, sign up below for the waitlist.

Gate 30 tasks you with the opportunity to contemplate your passion and desire in terms of your intentions and the dreams and ideas you want to bring into fruition. It invites you to reevaluate if your passion is directed toward what you truly want, is in alignment, or perhaps suppressed. To be mindful of which dreams consume your passion and how you can sustain the intensity of your passion to fulfill your desires.
Part of this transit involves practicing patience and allowing yourself to wait. Can you wait until the right time to work toward your passion? How do you wait, and what do you do with your energy while waiting for the opportune moment?
Gate 30 embodies the energy of gracefully navigating life through the strategic use of emotional intelligence and passion. It invites you to delight in the authenticity of your feelings, break free from conventional emotional norms, and find pleasure in establishing healthy emotional boundaries and connections.
However, there's potential to be distracted by emotional constraints, where you may lean towards victimhood, acting out when faced with unclear emotional boundaries. The key to elevating the expansive energy of Gate 30 lies in identifying the specific requirements in which your emotional well-being can thrive.
Here are some journaling prompts to deepen your understanding and engagement with this transit:

IN HARMONY
Green Day?! Yeah, Green Day. Their new album Saviors was released a few weeks ago and it’s great. Green Day is great and fun and loud and soft and hard and so many things all at once. It’s good to see and hear and witness multitudes. And also the permission that age allows to stand firmly in multitudes. They wrote the album they wanted to write. Zero fucks given. It happens to be really, really good. The songs are reminiscent of a throwback to The Ramones a la Rockaway Beach, a revisit of the 80’s rock power ballad, classic punk making out with pop, and a little bit of 90’s Weezer vibe thrown in. It’s a protest and done in a way that Green Day does so well. As art and not a whole lot of introduction to it. They do what they do and they do it well. For a really long time now.
Sadly I wasn’t expecting much from this new album and I realized just how shitty of an expectation that was. Ageist really, to think that they could only create impactful art as younger men. That experience would dull their edge instead of refine it. Ooof. That’s on me. How embarrassing.
I first saw Green Day in 1994 as part of Lollapalooza on Randall’s Island in New York. I went with a handful of guy friends and my friend Stacy. My other girlfriends were scared to see Green Day live because it was known that Billy Joe used to spit out at the audience from the stage. Anyone else remember that? This left Stacy and I unphased. We were not about to miss Smashing Pumpkins, The Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, and Green Day all because of a little spit. It was worth it. I certainly never imagined 30 years later I’d be seeing Green Day and the Smashing Pumpkins together again now at my daughter’s request. She didn’t believe the spit story. Time is funny. It does refine us.
My favorite song on the album is Bobby Sox. As a stand alone song it’s fun and catchy and hard and soft, and paired with the video it’s really, really great. Love the throwback to the 90’s house party video. Oh those were fun. Melts my heart to see three men who have created together for over 30 years be in love with each other. More of that please. More love. All the kinds.
I hope you enjoy it too. Hit listen to get a taste.
And hey, some of you asked for all the In Harmony songs as a playlist. If that's you, here it is.
