CALL BACK
Last week in the newsletter I mentioned, in a very small and insignificant way, a very big and terrific thing. Toward the end, while musing on the idea of completeness in the creative process I wrote just a tiny word or two about the act of calling your energy back. If you missed it, you can catch up with us and read last week’s essay here.
Turns out these little tiny few words are about a really, really big thing. Follow me down this rabbit hole for a minute.
As creatives our purpose is to take in what is going on around us, digest and metabolize it and present it back to the collective as a reflection. Whether we are creating a logo, advertising campaign, news article, painting, song or dance, it is all a version of how we experience the energy around us. Being able to get a read on our surroundings or understand the rhythm or pulse of society is a pretty spectacular thing. We offer a reflection which can be either beautiful or terrible. Accepted or rejected. These reflections of all kinds can be uncomfortable. And thank goodness. A lot of the time people only welcome change when confronted, or until staying the same gets really, really, uncomfortable.
Ew. Gross. Just change. Seriously, it's what we are designed to do in these awkward human bodies. It's not that bad. Really.
Back to it…
As we act as filters, gatherers, distillers of our world, we must remain open to receiving what is going on around us. Which is also beautiful and terrible. I spend a significant amount of time with my mentorship clients guiding them in how to achieve neutrality and clarity while also remaining available for inspiration and the outside energies necessary to develop a clear point of view and perspective on which to create. Maintaining this neutrality, which leads to clarity, is a critical part of the creative process. When we lose the ability to reach neutrality and clarity, our energy is not moving and we get stuck, blocked, burned out - enter any one of 100 #coaching pain point words here. Whatever it is, it is energy. All of it. So start there.
Just as we take energy in as inspiration to create, we also put a tremendous amount of energy into what it is that we create. The process, the procedures, all the steps, and of course the final product, image, project, all the things. They leave our hands with our energy. So, afterwards, it is wise to call it back. A big idea with a big impact, yet a very simple thing to do.
By calling energy back after a project leaves your attention, calling your energy back serves as a practice of being finished. A representation of something being over, even if momentarily. We call our energy back, signaling an ending and this energy is now available for us to put toward new pursuits, relationships, ideas, inspirations; you get it. It is seldom that this energy comes back on its own. While it is our unique energy, it often needs help parting from an object or pursuit and coming home to us. This simple act refills us with our own unique energy, which is really important. While it is important to keep energy moving to reach neutrality and clarity, it is also important to fill ourselves back up with our own energy. Being filled with our own energy allows less space for other energies to enter and for things to get stuck, blocked, all the words. Your unique energy is the most powerful and potent to you, in your body, so call it back. It’s quick and easy. Promise. If you are interested in learning how, get in on Mentorship. THE CREATIVE
Welcome to The Creative. Twice a month I will be sharing quotes from the books, Art is the Highest Form of Hope and The Creative Act. I find perspectives on the creative process to be so meta when it comes to life. We are a creative process and everything we do is subject to the same rules. Creation is non-linear. It's messy. It moves forward and backward. And also gets stuck. Oftentimes we do not realize the purpose of a singular creative process until years later. Creativity likes to surprise us.
“Art won’t let you down.” - Damien Hirst
Art in my house happens with app caps. ART. It’s fine art, music, branding, imagery, poetry, writing, all the things. Music has always been central in our home. It is on all the time. My husband in his office, me in mine, the kid with headphones or singing along to Spotify on her laptop. But at night and on the weekends, we listen together. Perhaps this is exactly what records were made for.
A collective experience.
The kid picked out her first album at 4. We brought her to the local shop and said pick whatever you want. She chose Iron Maiden. Cool, and also it’s really hard to beat an Iron Maiden album cover. She had never seen anything like it. The art drew her in. Since then we visit record shops wherever we go. And sometimes the record shop is even housed inside the skate shop, which is pretty much what we imagine religious folk might mean when they say heaven.
A few weeks ago while at a nearby record shop we took a chance on a mystery stack. Wrapped in brown paper and separated by genre only, each mystery stack held 10 albums for $20. They were guaranteed to be in good shape without scratches or skips, but the rest was all chance. We decided on a Soul and R+B stack and held our excitement until after dinner when we unwrapped the albums. To our surprise there were 10 albums we didn’t have. This is unusual as the Dude has an incredibly eclectic collection. We were excited. As we listened to the albums one after another it became clear that ART is spectacular. Not every album was a hit but not one of them let us down. How extraordinary. It reminded me of all the times I’ve retreated to art in my life. Whether as a creator or a witness, ART is always there for us. All of us.
I think we lose sight of this as creatives when we are in the depths of our creative process. What leaves our hands, our bodies, mind, however what we create is manifested in this physical realm, to someone somewhere it will be a thing that never lets them down. And how extraordinary that is. So keep going. Creating. Making. Designing. Doing. Being. This power that you hold in your hands is transcendent to someone you’ve never met.
