OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD
Lately, I’ve been delving deeply into the creative process. This isn't surprising, given my profession, but I've been shifting my focus from the individual creative journeys of my clients to the broader concept of creativity itself. Stepping back to reflect on our roles as creatives, I continue to uncover profound insights.
There’s a prevailing misconception that creatives operate free of consequence. While creatives themselves don’t hold this belief, the broader society often overlooks the unique challenges and occupational hazards inherent to creative professions. Creativity is frequently viewed as a purely magical endeavor. And while it is magical, it also requires consistent effort and maintenance. Unlike other professions, the occupational hazards faced by creatives are rarely discussed. We often talk about fear, but for seasoned professionals, fear becomes secondary. We’ve navigated countless challenges to reach our level of expertise. Physical ailments like neck or hand pain are acknowledged, but the psychological hurdles as part of the work are often overlooked.
I propose that the most significant occupational hazard for creative professionals isn’t physical but psychological. Let’s consider invalidation as a primary challenge faced by those in creative fields. And not only a challenge but an occupational hazard. A state that comes along with expertise in the profession.
Imagine creatives on a conveyor belt from birth, each handed a large bag filled with the occupational hazards of our field. Inside this bag, we find fear and invalidation, the latter often stemming from breaking away from groupthink. These challenges are part and parcel of the creative journey, managed by professionals daily, whether consciously or unconsciously.
This bag is an inherent part of being creative, much like back pain is for a mover or eye strain for a scientist. Invalidation is simply part of the job. Expecting it to disappear is not helpful simply because it won’t. Instead, strive to get space from invalidation. Recognize it as an external factor, something you handle rather than something intrinsic to your identity or self-worth. Acknowledge it as part of your work, not a personal burden.
What are some other occupational hazards of being creative?

I loved this song the instant I heard it. I’m a big fan of Katie Crutchfield’s lyrics and this new album really hits all the right spots. The lyrics in this song really shine as supported by the harmonies of Katie and her duet partner MJ Lenderman. It’s a near perfect song.
