REVERIE + CLAIRVOYANCE
One of my greatest pleasures is curiosity. I am endlessly curious. Mostly about how seemingly different ideas inform each other. I’ve been lucky to have integrated this aspect of my curiosity into my life’s work. Exploring how different pursuits and interests collide with each other is always a fun adventure. This exploration 100% lights me up.
The focus of my thesis in graduate school was the clinical application of a technique I utilized as part of treatment with my patients. Outside of therapy sessions between myself and patients, I would draw a picture of each of my patients, usually only once throughout our therapeutic relationship. These drawings were not literal representations of each patient, but based on a visual communication I would receive during treatment. Some would appear as a tree, a feather, a building. The images would vary and I learned to just allow them to manifest rather than try to have them make sense. I attached the process of what I was learning and communicating by creating these drawings with an idea created by Bay Area psychoanalyst Thomas Ogden, known as the Intersubjective Analytic Third.
First, I’ll say I love Tom Ogden. He’s everything I adore about psychoanalysis. Intellectual and also waaaay outside of the box. In some ways psychoanalytic theory takes far out and very forward thinking ideas and brings them back to science and utility. The idea of an Intersubjective Analytic Third is far out there. That’s one of the reasons it is still so appealing to me. In essence, Ogden proposes that there are three entities that share the analytic space. The analyst, the patient, and a third entity that is a combination of the experience of both the analyst and the patient. This combination and communication between analyst and patient creates a third and what Ogden refers to as being intersubjective in that it belongs to both. It’s such a brilliant idea that it makes my head hurt in the best possible way. What I was proposing in my thesis is that these drawings were an extension of this Intersubjective Analytic Third. These drawings didn’t just represent my patient, but rather a combination of both our experiences in the treatment room and one that I could use to inform treatment.
I referred to the drawings in a very interpretive way, one very much aligned with psychoanalytic thought. They became a touchstone to engage with when crafting interpretations and fostering insights. These drawings were considered alongside another idea of Ogden’s, reverie. Ogden proposed that reverie, a state during or outside of treatment where the analyst's mind night wander to the experience of the patient, was incredibly informative in treatment. In his own work with patients, if his mind wandered or he was in reverie during a session, he would bring the context to light in order to inform the treatment. If a patient was talking and his mind wandered for a brief moment to a task he had to complete later that day, Ogden would bring it up in the session. This can look like, “while you were talking my mind went to the fact that I will be home late tonight because my car has to go into the shop.” Ogden would take this reverie as a possible message. Perhaps the patient was feeling broken too. Or perhaps the patient was feeling as though everything and everyone was more important than her. If Ogden was drawn into reverie when she was speaking, perhaps others are too.
I found looking at treatment through the lens of both reverie and the Intersubjective Analytic Third to be tremendously helpful and also creative. Giving voice to these pictures or moments and making them alive in the treatment room was not only helpful but also informative in a deeper way that otherwise wasn’t always within reach. As I’ve become more skilled at energy work and my study of clairvoyance has deepened over this past year, I can see great similarities between what Ogden proposed and the process of these modalities.
In energy work we use visualizations and pictures, usually during meditation to move energy and read energy. Essentially what I think I was doing without knowing it was creating these visualizations and pictures and making them real. My illustrations were not only representative of the Intersubjective Analytic Third, but also representative of each patient’s energy and how I was reading it. In reflection I see a similar connection between Ogden’s idea of reverie and the pictures we look at visually during energy work. There is so much to be found when we slow down and take the time to examine the information that results in an exchange of ideas or energy. The skill of being able to sit in reverie, and make sense of it is such an asset to the creative process. We have access to so much more information. And this information is subtle and just like the Intersubjective Analytic Third, colored by our experience, making it a truly authentic expression to guide our work.

IN HARMONY
I was introduced to this band by my daughter. She’s much more creative when it comes to all the music Spotify and Apple Music can expose us too. Finding playlists and going down the rabbit hole of this sounds like that, then inspired by this, etc. I’ve discovered some incredible music just by making stations and following a vibe thread to thread. I forget exactly how Vansire appeared but I’m so glad they did. This song is from 2019 but it remains one of my favorites from the Minnesota duo. A bit of Belle and Sebastian, Sufjan Stevens and Noah Kahn and maybe even the Shins.
Their newer work is equally lovely. I always enjoy a folk vibe with a back beat.
I hope you enjoy it too. Hit listen to get a taste.
And hey, some of you asked for all the In Harmony songs as a playlist. If that's you, here it is.
